An event poster design with a modern meets mid-(16th) century look for a small renaissance fair in Oregon, IL.
I have an interest in renaissance fairs and Elizabethan history, but their design aesthetic is always so outdated and unappealing. So, I was chomping at the bit to create some imagery that was cool and contemporary instead.
Stronghold is the site of a historic manor, built to look like a castle, and every October they host an Olde English Faire where you can be taken back to the 1570’s to learn a bit of history while touring the castle or explore fantastical vendors on the grounds. With that in mind, I decided to letter the Latin phrase “Esse Quam Videri” which roughly translates to “to be, rather than to appear.” Which is an homage to the living history quality that makes this event unique.
